Curriculum K-8

Overview of Classrooms and Curriculum

Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten class focuses on essential literacy skills that will provide students with a strong academic foundation.  In addition, students use manipulatives as they explore patterns and grasp other important math concepts.  Letters and sounds come alive with Zoo Phonics, engaging students in reading and writing on their own.  Boys and girls enjoy music, physical education, and art as they actively learn healthy ways to express themselves.  All subjects are taught from a Christian perspective, as students are inspired to pursue excellence.

All day Kindergarten is offered 3 days a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

First and Second Grades

First and second grade students are challenged by their teacher to strive for excellence.  In this well-managed classroom, students have the structure they need to feel confident and secure as they make great strides in every academic area.  Creative teaching ideas bring about a variety of activities to captivate student’s curiosity.  Children investigate God’s world through such activities, for example, as hatching their own silk worms; washing, carding, and spinning sheep’s wool; and truly experiencing the phases of matter.  Boys and girls are further challenged through a wide variety of literature. Math concepts are captured and displayed in an interesting array of paper classroom quilts, along with plenty of practice to solidify the high goals of the math curriculum.  The truth and application of God’s Word is woven throughout each subject taught.

Third and Fourth Grades

Third and fourth grade students are drawn into the fascinating world of learning by being encouraged to think independently while working cooperatively.  Students are inspired and given the tools to observe, think, experiment, examine, research, and reason.  For example, students explore different environments in the United States by building “mini-habitats” of different biomes and are doing experiments to investigate how plants and animals adapt, thrive, and relate to their surroundings. In addition, they participate in National competitions with K-nex, study electricity by creating their own electrical boards, follow the Iditerod Race by choosing their own mushers to whom they write. Third and fourth graders also have been known to experience math and science through baking.  This classroom environment promotes Christian principles while pressing students to achieve excellence.

Fifth and Sixth Grades

In fifth and sixth grade, students are expected to use their unique gifts and talents to achieve excellence in all areas; however, their different learning styles are recognized and a variety of teaching techniques are used to enrich each student’s learning experience. Students use an inquiry-based approach to gain understanding of the science of physics.  They are challenged in reading and writing while participating in Literature Circles and by being exposed to several types of genres.  Math is emphasized in this classroom through a variety of teaching techniques.  God’s Word is not only taught as a subject, but it’s presented and modeled as a way of life. Students also compete in an annual Spelling Bee and Fine Arts Festival with area Christian Schools.

Seventh and Eighth Grades

Seventh and eight grade students reach their full potential in a learning environment based on high expectations. A variety of learning experiences spur students on to higher levels of thinking and responsibility.  Team building is emphasized and students are challenged to work together in and out of the classroom.  Students enjoy thinking independently, expressing themselves in debates, taking risks in simulation activities, and competitions.  In addition, students refine all academic skills they need to succeed in high school and beyond.  God’s Word is studied and applied to each area taught. Students also compete in an annual Spelling Bee and Fine Arts Festival with area Christian Schools.
